Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 9-inch round baking pan.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside.
3. In another large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
4. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract.
5. Gradually add the dry flour mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Start and finish with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
8. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
9. Serve the spice cake with plain buttermilk or with a dusting of powdered sugar or a scoop of whipped cream.
